For San Jose, a Memorable Evening - Part Salon, Part One Day Art Fair

By Erin Goodwin-Guerrero

Graduating from their spacious home, where three previous art parties have showcased local artists and lavishly hosted the art community, Sconberg and Henderson moved this year’s event to their vacant warehouse off Alma Street.   Although the “art party” is officially a party for friends and family, that features the art of friends and family, most would agree that the Sconberg-Henderson network has grown exponentially since the first festivities a scant four years ago.  This unbelievable extravaganza, perhaps even better than a Bienale, featured tons of art in numerous galleries, bands performing on several stages with ample dance floors, lots of fire, outdoor sculpture, and catered food and drink.

At least a thousand people jammed in to see the art, to be seen (many in the costume theme “Moulin Rouge meets Mad Max”), to party and support the Arts Council Silicon Valley, to the tune of $15 to $50 on a sliding scale.  There were over 900 works of art, a lot of it grand in scale, and around 120 artists.  It is rumored that artists sold from 30 to 50K of their work.  Sconberg and Henderson did not keep track nor take any percentage, as they emphasize,  “This is not a gallery operation, and we have no desire to get approach the party as a commercial vehicle. Everyone did it for fun and for free.”

Art Loan Fund Info: City Hall May 18th

Posted by kathryn on May 15th, 2010

Presentation by Arts Loan Fund Representatives

Tues, May 18, 3-4pm

San Jose City Hall, Tower Room 955**
**If you are planning to attend, it would be helpful if you could RSVP to me by Friday, May 14th.  If we get a lot of response, I may need to change to a larger room so please RSVP early if you are thinking of attending.

The ALF is an alternative to conventional higher-interest bank loans or lines of credit.  Many organizations utilize the ALF for short-term bridge loans for cash flow loans.  Loans are generally secured by awarded-but-not-yet-received grants or other guaranteed income.  Attached is a press release that I sent a few weeks ago that provides more information about the fund and its products.

Attending a presentation does not commit you to applying.  If you cannot attend the presentation, you can find out more information at their website:  http://www.artsloanfund.org or by contacting Lauren Maher at 415-777-4111 x 27 or lmaher@ncg.org.

Please spread the word to other arts organizations as this presentation is open to all arts organizations in the South Bay.

Thanks very much,

“Mining the Collection”
Badé Museum of Biblical Archaeology
Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, CA
Exhibition: Spring 2011

I have been selected as the second artist to be given full access to the collection at the Badé Archaeology Museum in Berkeley.  After a year of mining the collection and gathering inspiration from these ancient objects (1200BC) and their 1920s documentation, I will be creating an exhibition which will be shown in the Doug Adams Gallery, across from the objects that inspired the work.  This is a rare and exciting opportunity, one that brings back all my favorite memories of plumbing museum collections in graduate school.  I intend to blog about my progress at julianelsongal.blogspot.com.

Call: 1st Bio-Fiction Science, Art and Film Festival

Posted by kathryn on May 15th, 2010

The 1st Bio:Fiction Science, Art & Film Festival aims at attracting public awareness to synthetic biology and its ramifications for our daily life in the future.

The deadline for film entries is the 15th of July 2010
There is no entry fee for submitting films.

Synthetic biology is the design and construction of new biological systems not found in nature. Synthetic biology aims at creating new forms of life for practical purposes. By applying engineering principles to biology scientists will be able to design life forms much different from breeding or traditional genetic engineering.

We want to encourage filmmakers to share their cinematic visions of a present or future society shaped by synthetic biology. What is your view on a world living with synthetic life forms? Your approach is up to you - the filmmaker, scientists or artist - the entries can be on science, fiction, or science fiction. We welcome regular short film, animation or documentary film. The main criteria is that synthetic biology has to be reflected somehow in the work, but how you do it is up to you.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

Bio:Fiction Award – Short Fiction
Bio:Fiction Award – Documentary Film
Bio:Fiction Award - Animation
Online-Audience Award
Special Award of the Jury
(the prize money in each category will be announced soon)

On http://www.bio- fiction.com you will find more useful and inspiring information on synthetic biology, the entry form and the regulations of the filmfestival. The nominated films will be presented in public at the festival event in Vienna, Austria, in May 2011. Finally, a Bio:Fiction Award ceremony will build the highlight of the festival.

Whimsical Cocktail Hats with Corrine Takara - May 6, 6-9pm

Set your inner fashionista loose! Students will create a mini top hat or elegant flower cocktail hat that is unique using an array of repurposed materials such as sample wallpaper sheets, produce netting, Japanese Manga comics and silk tie remnants. Students will create an elegant hat - or even a bridal veil - that is certain to be a conversation starter! Wine and cheese will be provided.

It’s live! The Museum of Quilts & Textiles has officially started the fusionwear sv project/experiment.

In this project/experiment, the community is invited to submit images that capture their Silicon Valley experience. Artist Corinne Okada Takara will use these images as inspiration to design our own Silicon Valley print — in the spirit of the Hawaiian print. The public is also invited to submit their own Silicon Valley textile designs to our design contest. The public will vote to select the winners -  and the winners will receive yardage of fabric digitally printed with their design, a Museum membership, and the winning designs will appear in the artwear installation to be on view in the Museum during the 2010 01 SJ Biennial beginning September 16. This artwear installation — which will fill a Museum gallery during the 2010 01 SJ Biennial — will be a collaboration between couture and artwear designer Colleen Quen and artist Corinne Okada Takara and will include several of the textile designs generated by this community project/experiment.
