Filmmakers, researchers, genealogists, writers, interviewers, and oral historians who plan to start a project on the history of the Monterey Bay Region are invited to apply for a maximum of $1,000 grant to be awarded through the James Dolkas Memorial Fund at The Museum of Art & History @ the McPherson Center (MAH).

The endowment fund was established in honor of James Dolkas, who died in April 2001.  Dolkas was the founder and original president of the History Forum, a membership affiliate support group of The Museum of Art & History.  The members of the History Forum and the Sesnon Foundation set up the James Dolkas Memorial Fund through the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County and offer the grant annually to a worthy project that will advance community awareness about regional history.

Past awardees include: Barry Brown for his work on the California Powder Works, Santa Cruz County, 1861-1914 in 2009; Lucia MacLean for “The History of the Alba School and Recreation District in Ben Lomond”, and George Fogelson for his continued study of the History of Jews of Santa Cruz County with new research on the Alexander Family of Watsonville in 2008; Alverda Orlando for “Davenport History Website” and Philip Reader for “History of African Americans in Santa Cruz County” in 2007; Melissa Stevens for “An Oral History of Monterey Bay Fishermen, Part I” in 2006; and Dr. Julianne Burton-Carvajal for a guide to Monterey Bay adobes and Robert Edwards and Charr Simpson Smith of Cabrillo College for archeological work at the Redman-Hiraharra House, Watsonville in 2005.

Applications and information are available at The Museum of Art & History @ the McPherson Center, 705 Front Street, Santa Cruz or download from  Candidates will be asked to submit a 500 – word narrative outlining their proposal and final work (i.e. written document, film, museum exhibition, etc.).  Applications and narratives must be submitted to the Museum no later than October 18, 2010.
