ANDREW HEDGES INAUGURATES A NEW INVENTION AT THE ART ARK

Posted by erin on December 17th, 2009

Oh! that TANTRUM!

by Erin Goodwin-Guerrero

Tantrum-2

Shooting flames and firing serial explosive bursts, Tantrum circled the grounds of the Art Ark

On Saturday, December 12, Andrew Hedges gave a supportive, albeit wet, audience an entertaining inaugural show of his newest vehicle, Tantrum. Gas, oxygen and acetylene power the functions of this single seat convertible that cavorted nimbly around the grounds of the Art Ark, shooting fire and making startling sounds like a fusillade of gunshots. Red banners, echoing the contours of the panels in the sculpted body of the vehicle flapped in the breeze, possibly implying “caution, gangway!” A brave few boarded for a test ride of what constituted Hedges’ MFA exhibition project. Although this light industrial neighborhood is somewhat inured the sound of gunshots, apparently the police did appear to investigate, found the source of the complaint to be benign enough, enjoyed the “spectacle” and moved on.

Tantrum appears to be hybrid of Mad Max art car, car machismo, alternative fuel vehicle and hissing frill-necked dragon lizard. It is best seen with the inventor himself at the helm, a self-satisfied and slightly demonic grin lighting up his face. Hedges has managed, once again, to combine into sculpture his love of machines that move, make noise and incorporate some sort of naughty if not downright antisocial elements, (his motorized bicycles notwithstanding).

KARIMI’S STUDENTS ENGAGE THE PROCESS, FORM AND CONTENT

Two Hours at the San Jose Museum of Art with Young Art Students

By Pantea Karimi, Artist/Art Teacher

Studying art using computer screens, posters and books cannot evoke the same reaction as seeing the actual pieces in a museum or a gallery. Sunday December 13th was the last day of Alexander Calder’s show, Color in Motion, at the San Jose Museum of Art. Additionally, two other wonderful exhibitions were on display: Chuck Close prints: Process and Collaboration and Ansel Adams: Early Works. I took a few of my students, 7-11 years old, to the San Jose Museum of Art on December 13th for a two-hour field trip.

We started our tour with Chuck Close gallery. I told my students about his life, media and work process before we entered the gallery. Screen-print and Intaglio printmaking techniques sounded mysterious to my students and they were amazed by how Chuck Close has been using these two processes in his works. Chuck Close’s twelve-step etching, Self Portrait-Scribble, elicited a stirring reaction; my students tried to figure out how Close used the metal plates, colors, and layers in order to create his self-portrait print; they counted and matched the layers for a few minutes. I let them figure out the process and when they finally did it, they got excited and started a commotion, which also engaged other visitors around us and put a smile on the gallery guard’s face.

BECA Foundation Announces Expansion of Curate This 2010

Posted by kathryn on December 14th, 2009

CURATE THIS! 2010, the second installment of the CURATE THIS! exhibition series created by BECA: Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art, is evolving from a one city-wide event location into a global arts + cultural exchange event involving multiple venues located in multiple cities around the world. The global art + design exhibition will take place from July 1 – December 31, 2010.

Through the exhibition of works of art + design by emerging artists, designers, duos, groups and collectives around the world, The BECA Foundation aims to facilitate an experimental, cross-pollination of creative innovation and new ideas in diverse locations around the world. The title, ‘CURATE THIS!’ reflects a departure from the familiar large scale exhibition model, typically curated by a singular vision with one head curator, to an exhibition with components and related events ‘curated’ by the public and professional and independent participants residing in multiple cities around the world. The first ‘CURATE THIS!’ experiment took place in early 2008 and led artists and directors, Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough to begin brainstorming the expansion of the experiment to bring about greater benefits to a larger number of participants.

BECA is an acronym for Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art and the core belief system at The BECA Foundation is that “New art + new design fuels the best of what’s yet to come on this planet.” To help mix that fuel and kick start new possibilities, the expansion of the CURATE THIS! exhibition project will facilitate a broader exposure of new art, new design and new ideas through both a physical and online network of participating venues in multiple cities around the world. The aim of building the network is to create international arts + cultural exchange opportunities, broaden arts education opportunities and appreciation for emerging contemporary art + design, facilitate introductions and lay the foundation for future collaborations toward the realization of a progressive, meaningful and fulfilling future for everyone. Global online content delivery of exhibition events and related special projects will enable global participation by millions around the world. The BECA Foundation is pleased to welcome the participation of Helen Pheby, PhD, Curator of Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK whose research and curatorial work spans the globe including the US and Iraq and Ellen Lupton, legendary design educator and Curator of Contemporary Design at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Each has a unique insight which will add further depth and diversity to new CURATE THIS! 2010 exhibition components.

Upcoming participating venues in Boston, New Orleans, Miami, Denver, Los Angeles, Santa Fe and London have been the first locations to sign on. Venue participation proposals have also been submitted by exclusively online communities. Artists, designers, independent and established curators, gallery and art space directors as well as lease-holders and owners of other event and non-traditional exhibition spaces may email Melissa Roberts at mail@thebecafoundation.org for venue participation information. The BECA Foundation is building a global network to achieve a positive impact on the future of the residents of cities around the world. The formerly unimaginable, previously impossible and the creative ideas and proposals that may run counter to the current status quo are most welcome.

Robert Colescott was outrageous, courageous, prolific, a pioneer, an activist, gentle, and loving. He was an important historical figure in the world of painting in the shifts from Modernism to Postmodernism from the late 20th Century to the present. In 1997, the entire American pavilion at the Venice Bienale was dedicated to Colescott’s work, an unprecedented yet merited honor.

ICA Announces Open Access Printmaking Program

Posted by kathryn on December 10th, 2009

ICA Print CenterIn memory of Michele Scott, former Board member and dear friend of the ICA, we are very pleased to announce the recent naming of the Michele J. Scott Open Access Printmaking Program at the ICA.

As a longtime supporter of the ICA, Michele led a small group of visionaries who were determined to have a printmaking facility included in the ICA in the early planning stages of the new facility. It is in large part thanks to Michele’s tireless dedication and enthusiasm that we were able to realize that dream. Since opening in 2007, the ICA Print Center has hosted 30 workshops, eight Artists-in-Residence and 25 open access work days. Of all the Print Center programs, open access days are the most popular among our artist members.

The Michele J. Scott Open Access Program is available to artists familiar with the printmaking process to use as their own studio work space. Any artist who demonstrates an understanding of the medium is eligible to use the studio’s supplies, the press, and/or digital equipment (the certification program is offered free at the Print Center). This is especially helpful to graduates of local arts programs who no longer have access to university facilities, and artists who do not have the resources or studio space to own their own equipment.

Open access days at the Print Center are held on the first Sunday of the month from 10am – 4:30pm ($15 per hour). Upcoming open access days: Sunday, January 24 and March 7 (and the first Sunday of the month thereafter). Contact Fanny Retsek for more information.

We also invite you to take advantage of the wide range of printmaking workshops and programs offered for novices and experienced artists at the ICA Print Center. The 2010 ICA Print Center Workshop and Michele J. Scott Open Access Program schedule will be available in January.

We look forward to seeing you in the gallery and in the Print Center, soon!

ICA Executive Director

Space 47 Remains Active with Virtual Space

Posted by kathryn on December 10th, 2009

Dear Supporters of Space 47,

After a great two-year run, we have decided to close our beloved project space located in downtown San Jose’s SoFA district. Space 47 will remain active by continuing to provide a virtual space at www.space47.org. Together with a dedicated online presence, a dynamic group of artists, and upcoming site-specific projects and exhibitions, Space 47 will continue to promote its mission of fostering new ideas and supporting artistic exchange. Although there are several reasons behind our decision to close, it is now time for us as an independently run artist space to branch out into a new direction. We whole-heartedly encourage projects such as Space 47, and we hope that you will continue to support the efforts of emerging arts and artists in the South Bay.

Again, we are very thankful for your support during that past two years, and we will keep you posted on our latest Space 47 Projects.

Sincerely,
Angelica Muro
